Fun – and Learning -- in the Field: Back to Nature
Was a Success!
Where can you walk on a beach that has fossils from the Pleistocene Age? Or gaze across the water to Fig Island – crowned with sugar maple trees and home to one of the Lowcountry's most significant shell middens? Where can you paddle among dolphins, spot a red-tailed hawk or board a shrimp boat?
Answer: EIOLT's successful Back to Nature Celebration May 16-17. "Thank you!" to the experts who donated their time and great talents as outings leaders: Patrick McMillan, Sid Gauthreaux & Carroll Belser, Anne Mattox, Billy McCord, Lindsey Young, Meg Hoyle, Irene Weber, Pat Levi, Bob Sanders, Susan Roberts, Elaine Freeman and Capt. Jimmy Bell. Locations ranged from Edingsville Beach and Seabrook Plantation to Botany Bay and Edisto Island Serpentarium. Event co-chairs were Catherine Douglass and Sid Gauthreaux.
Lead sponsors were Edisto Sales and Rentals Realty - Matthew K. Kizer and PalmettoPride S.C. Anti-Litter Organization. Supporting sponsors were Youmans Gas & Oil Co., Inc. and Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co., Inc.

Dr. Sid Gauthreaux's rendering of a Bachman's Warbler (left) provided the signature image for EIOLT's 2009 Back to Nature Celebration. The bird adorned t-shirts, posters and other items. Once seen regularly in South Carolina, the Bachman's Warbler became extinct when its wintering grounds in Cuba were eradicated in pursuit of sugarcane revenues

Teeing Off At Tomato Golf
The second Tomato Open Golf Tournament attracted a field of nearly 40 players to the
the beautiful Plantation Course at Edisto in June. A fundraiser for Edisto Island Open Land Trust, the tournament included a $25,000 hole-in-one contest, putting contest, a big raffle, Mulligans and an awards ceremony over a barbecue lunch. "We're very grateful to all involved, said event chair "BoBo" Lee, who also heads the EIOLT Board of Directors. Participants included not only players but also businesses that served as hole sponsors and raffle prize contributors. "As always, our dedicated volunteers really gave their all," added BoBo.
