Talkin' Cotton with Tom Austin

October 10, 2019

October 10, 2019 from 9:30 to 11:00AM

Hutchinson House, 7666 Point of Pines Road, Edisto Island, SC

Join us at the Hutchinson House to see the site of our 2019 experimental Sea Island Cotton plot and learn about the history of the crop and EIOLT's efforts to cultivate it at the Hutchinson House from staff member Tom Austin. Tom is leading our Sea Island Cotton project and although he's an ecologist and gardener, he's not a farmer and has never grown cotton. Yet, through careful research and planning, we succeeded in growing our first crop of Sea Island Cotton. The first time it's been grown on the property in 85 years. Tom will discuss how Sea Island Cotton came to dominate Edisto Island and how it subsequently fell into obscurity and near extinction, relate the challenges of growing this year's crop, and show off one of the specialized cotton gins he's had to build in orger to process the fibers.
