Hutchinson House Easement
8.9 acres of highland
Once the site of the old Shell House plantation and later the historic Hutchinson House, the Edisto Island Open Land Trust bought this property because of its significant historical value, in addition to its conservation value. Planted and farmed in Edisto's early plantation economy days, the land lies barren today but is now protected from development. The historic Hutchinson House has also been saved from demolition and futher deterioration with this effort, and the Edisto Island Open Land Trust is in the early stages of research and planning for its preservation and restoration in hopes to create a community-wide gathering place and educational resource to celebrate and learn more about our cultural heritage.
